Fuchsia boliviana ‘Alba’
Bolivian Fuchsia is a unique Fuchsia species native to the Andes Mountains of South America in Bolivia, Peru, and Argentina. Unlike most common garden Fuchsia, Bolivian Fuchsia sports large, felted leaves and long racemes of elongated, tubular flowers. The variety ‘Alba’ has the same exotic foliage as the species, but with pale pink blossoms with red sepals. While not popular, Fuchsia berries are edible and we find the fruit of this form of Bolivian Fuchsia to some of the best tasting Fuchsia fruit, with a kiwi-like flavor.
Bolivian Fuchsia is an upright species and will grow shrubby with age. In frost-free conditions, expect six to eight feet in height and width. Despite its tropical appearance, this plant can tolerate frost and will even come back from its rhizomatous roots if it happens to freezes down to the ground. We recommend moist, well-draining soil, part sun, and frequent feeding with a balanced fertilizer to encourage blooming.
