Coniogramme emeiensis ‘Golden Zebra’

Golden Zebra huh? Yes, you read that right! This Plant Delights Nursery/ Juniper Level Botanic Garden introduction is a variegated cultivar of Coniogramme emeiensis, one of the bamboo ferns native to Mt. Emei in the Sichuan province of China. This selection has dramatic yellow bands on slender lime-green fronds that actually do evoke the stripes of a zebra, albeit in all the wrong colors. The common name ‘bamboo fern’ arises from the fronds’ upwards-pointing habit and thin stems, which give the plant a lofty and open look. In summer it’s sure to turn heads and stop conversations mid-sentence.

‘Golden Zebra’ Ferns are semi-evergreen, clumping plants that will gently spread with time, topping out at about two feet in height. Being native to moist woodlands, they perform best in part shade and where they’ll get regular moisture. If you’re winters run cold, these make choice houseplants.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7b or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
