Southern Twinberry
Myrcianthes pungens
We’re excited to be able to offer this rare and cold hardy fruit tree native to Southern Brazil, Bolivia, Argentina, and Uruguay. Known as Guabiju or Guabiyu in its native South America, Southern Twinberry is closed related to the Florida native Twinberry, Myrcianthes pungens. Unlike its common cousin, Southern Twinberry has delicious fruit that is cultivated commercially to a limited extent in Uruguay.
Based on our trials so far, we expect Southern Twinberry to be quite cold hardy, tolerating temperatures down into the low twenties or upper teens. This is an exciting new fruit that has the potential for commercialization. Plants are evergreen and grow into a large shrub or small tree.
Cold hardy to USDA zones 9a or to 20 degreees Fahrenheit.
