Aloiampelos striatula

Aloiampelos striatula, formerly known as Aloe striatula, is a succulent plant native to southern Africa, particularly the mountainous regions of South Africa and Lesotho. Unlike its close relative Aloe vera, this unique plant is quite frost tolerant, which has garnered it the common name ‘Hardy Aloe’. While there’s historical evidence that Hardy Aloe has been used in similar ways to the common Aloe vera, we think it’s cool enough to appreciate without all the fuss of harvesting leaves for their gooey gel.

Plants have upright stems and somewhat narrow fleshy leaves with distinctive white stripes that run along their center. In early Spring, Hardy Aloe plants produce attractive towers of orange and yellow tubular blooms that stand above the foliage. Plants do best in full sun, but will tolerate some shade, and are very drought tolerant once established. Otherwise, Hardy Aloe is quite adaptable to different soil types so long as they are well-draining.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 8b or to 15 degrees Fahrenheit.
