'Frostproof' Hardy Gardenia

$20.00

Gardenia jasminoides ‘Frostproof'

Hardy Gardenia, also known as cape jasmine, is a fragrant evergreen shrub native to China, Taiwan, Japan, and Vietnam. It’s widely cultivated its lush, glossy green foliage and aromatic white flowers, which have a captivating, sweet and creamy scent. This intoxicating scent has long been used in perfumery and the edible flower petals make an enticing herbal tea.

There are many species of Gardenia and even more cultivated varieties, but we’re confident that ‘Frostproof’ is one of the most reliable. Besides tolerating moderately cold winter temperatures, this Gardenia also has low summer heat requirements, which makes it a consistent and early bloomer in cooler summer climates. Compared to other double-blooming Hardy Gardenia varieties like ‘Chuck Hayes’ or the single-blooming ‘Kleim’s Hardy’, ‘Frostproof’ is the best-growing.

Hardy Gardenias typically grow between three and six feet tall and thrive in well-draining, acidic soil with consistent moisture and part sun. Hardy Gardenia are heavy feeders and appreciate regular feeding with a balance fertilizer.

Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7b or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
