Rohdea japonica
Japanese Sacred Lily is an evergreen perennial native to Japan and China that is cultivated for it’s architectural foliage and attractive red fruit. This woodland native is one of our absolute favorite evergreen plants for dry shade. Forming low, dense clumps, Japanese Sacred Lily has thick, upright foliage with an attractive dark green color. In fall and winter plants produce vibrant clusters of red berries that add visual interest during the cooler months. Our selection of Japanese Sacred Lily is taller and more upright than the straight species, with some undulation on the leaf edges.
Growing to 18 inches high, plants slowly spread to form a small clump, looking reminiscent of a hosta or cast iron plant. Japanese Sacred Lily is cold hardy and drought tolerant, making it a great candidate for planting under conifers. We recommend full or part shade and occasional summer irrigation for best growth.
Cold hardy to zone 6a and above, or to -10 degrees Fahrenheit.
