Mexican Cardinal Flower, also known as Mexican Lobelia, is a hardy flowering perennial native to Mexico and Central America. This striking plant has attractive, dark green, willow-like foliage and showy red, tubular flowers with a yellow throat. Mexican Cardinal Flower blooms continuously spring through fall and makes a wonderful companion plant for other long-blooming perennials like Fuchsia, Flowering Maple, Salvia, and Hyssop. Flowers are very attractive to hummingbirds as well as butterflies and bees.
Plants grow to about three feet high and wide and are evergreen to about twenty degrees Fahrenheit. Below that temperature, plants will freeze down to the ground but the rhizomatous roots are hardy all the way to about zero. Mexican Cardinal Flower appreciates regular moisture, but is surprisingly drought tolerant once established. We recommend full or part sun and well-draining soils.
