Zingiber mioga
Mioga Ginger, also known as Japanese Ginger simply as Myoga, is a hardy perennial native to Japan, China, and Korea. Much like its relative, the culinary ginger from the grocery store, Mioga Ginger forms an underground rhizome. However, with this species it’s not the root that’s typically eaten, but rather the flowers! The unopened flower buds (and the young stems) are enjoyed fresh or cooked and have a crisp texture and ginger and green onion flavor. This spicy, aromatic, floral ingredient is cherished in Japan pickled, as a garnish, and in soups and salads.
Mioga Ginger forms a small colony and individual stems will reach about three feet high. Clumps will spread about six feet wide with time. This hardy ginger is easy to grow, adapting to most soil types and sun exposures. We recommend keeping them well watered and fertilized, although plants will tolerate a surprising amount of drought. We offer both green and variegated selections.
