Mysore Raspberry

Rubus niveus

The Mysore Raspberry is a species of bramble native to the foothills of the Himalayan mountains in Bhutan, India, and Nepal. Like many raspberry and blackberry species, Mysore Raspberry is valued for its sweet, edible fruit that is similar to the black raspberry, Rubus occidentalis. However, unlike many commonly cultivated Rubus, this species is subtropical and does not require winter chilling to flower and fruit. For this reason, Mysore Raspberry has become popular in the backyard gardens in the tropics where it is difficult to grow common raspberries.

Plants grow with arching canes up to seven feet high and have a lax habit. Plants have small thorns, similar to the common garden raspberry. Mysore Raspberry has attractive white barked stems and fuchsia colored flowers. We find that if you pick the fruit while still firm, they have a great tart flavor. If the fruit is allowed to ripen to a soft texture, they take on a very sweet, mild flavor reminiscent of blue raspberry flavoring. Mysore Raspberry is adaptable, but prefers full to part sun and regular moisture.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 8a, or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
