Pseudocydonia sinensis

Pseudocydonia sinensis, commonly known as Perfume Quince or Chinese Quince, is a deciduous fruit tree native to China that adds an element of elegance to the landscape. Perfume Quince has been cultivated in China for thousands of years and is believed to be one of the earliest cultivated fruit trees there. Trees are valued for both their ornamental quality and their edible fruits. The fruit is used in traditional Chinese medicine and is also consumed fresh or cooked.

Perfume Quince is a small tree, typically reaching a height of twenty feet, with a spreading, rounded canopy of elliptical leaves that turn vibrant shades of yellow, orange, and red in the fall. The tree produces fragrant white or pink flowers in spring and mature trees have exfoliating bark that boasts splotches in shades of green, brown, and yellow. Its unique fruits resemble a large, round quince and have a tart, astringent flavor when raw. However, when cooked or preserved, the fruits develop a sweet and aromatic taste, often used in jams, jellies, and desserts.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 5a or to -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
