Iochroma fuchsioides
Red Iochroma is a flowering evergreen shrub native to the Andes Mountains of Ecuador and Colombia. A close relative to the Angel’s Trumpets, Brugmansia, Red Iochroma is a striking ornamental plant that blooms profusions of small, scarlet, tubular flowers reminiscent of the unrelated Fuchsia. Naturally a multi-stemmed shrub, Red Iochroma has an open, upright habit and glossy, round, tropicalesque leaves. The pendulous flowers are popular with hummingbirds and plants tend to bloom almost continuously during the warmer months.
Red Iochroma is surprisingly frost tolerant and is root hardy to twenty degrees Fahrenheit. Plants grow to eight feet high with time and perform well as either container plants or house plants. Red Iochroma prefers well-drained soil, regular moisture, and partial to full sun, performing best in protected locations away from strong winds. We recommend feeding this plant regularly with a balanced fertilizer to encourage flowering.
