Rice Paper Plant
Tetrapanax papyrifer
Rice Paper Plant is a fast-growing, evergreen, tropical-looking shrub native to Taiwan and southern China. Its common name originates from its role in the production of traditional rice paper, which is made from the pith of its stems (and not from rice at all!). This delicate, lightweight paper has been used in Chinese calligraphy, painting, and crafts for centuries. Today Rice Paper Plant is appreciated mostly as an ornamental plant due to its large, shoy leaves and lofty, palm tree-like habit.
This striking plant typically grows between ten and fifteen feet tall and its dramatic, lobed leaves can reach up three feet wide. Rice Paper Plant is a choice plant for those looking to add an exotic flair to their garden and is suitable for small gardens, having a narrow and upright habit. In late summer, plants produce showy clusters of small, creamy-white flowers. Plants prefer full or part sun, well-draining soils, and consistent moisture. We recommend fertilizing regularly for best growth.
Cold hardy to zone 8a or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
