Spiral Aloe
Aloe polyphylla
Spiral Aloe is a rare succulent endemic to the high altitudes of the Drakensberg Mountains of Lesotho, in southern Africa. This unique aloe is characterized by its mesmerizing spiraling growth, with thick, fleshy leaves tightly arranged in a perfect whorl. When mature, Spiral Aloe produces a tall flower stalk with striking orange tubular blossoms.
In its native habitat, Spiral Aloe grows in cool, mountainous environments with well-draining soil and frequent moisture from mist and rainfall. Unlike many other aloe species, it is not adapted to prolonged drought and requires regular moisture. Plants prefer full sun in cooler climates but in areas where summers get hot it will need some shade. Spiral Aloe grows about eighteen inches and two feet wide.
Cold hardy to USDA Zone 7b or to 5 degrees Fahrenheit.
