Everblooming Tree Dahlia
Dahlia tenuicaulis
The Everblooming Tree Dahlia is one of the so-called ‘Tree Dahlias’ native to high elevations in Mexico and Central America. Because of its upland habitat, this species is surprisingly cold hardy and flourishes in many temperate climates. Rapidly reaching heights of up to 15 feet in one season, you can literally watch the canes grow throughout the day. The Tree Dahlia has tubers and will die down during the winter making over-wintering similar to other Dahlias.
This species is smaller growing and bushier than Dahlia imperialis, which we sell under the name Tree Dahlia. They’re quite different, so why not grow both? Purportedly the Everblooming Tree Dahlia is more floriferous than the Tree Dahlia due to differences in photoperiod, although we find that the flowers are all still over head and hard to see anyway. Regardless, tree dahlias are a wonderful foliage plants and truly add an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ effect in the garden.
Cold hardy to zones 7b and above.
