Xanthoceras sorbifolium

Yellowhorn, also known as Chinese flowering chestnut, is a deciduous tree or large shrub native to northern China and Mongolia. In its native range, Yellowhorn is cultivated for its edible nuts which can be eaten raw, roasted, boiled, or pressed for oil. Additionally, Yellowhorn is a popular plant for beekeepers in China as their flowers produce significant amounts of nectar and impart a unique flavor to honey.

Plants grow to reach 15 feet in cultivation and have a vase-shaped crown. Pinnate leaves are very similar to those of the unrelated mountain ash, which is the origin of the species name sorbifolium. In spring, Yellowhorn plants are covered in an abundance of showy, star-shaped flowers that begin white and which have a throat that ages from yellow to red across several weeks. Plants prefer well-drained soil, full to part sun, and are drought-tolerant once established.
