Dragon Tree
Dracaena draco
The Canary Island Dragon Tree, or simply Dragon Tree, is a striking and iconic species native to the Canary Islands, Madeira, Cape Verde, and western Morocco. This slow-growing evergreen tree has a truly unique form, characterized by its thick, smooth trunk and a crown of sword-shaped leaves arranged in dense rosettes at the ends of the often-symmetrical branches. In its native habitat, Dragon Trees can reach heights of up to forty feet, though it often remains smaller in cultivation.
The resin obtained from the sap of the Dragon Tree has a characteristic dark red color, which has garnered it the name “Dragon’s Blood”, which it shares with several unrelated plants. This resin has been used for various purposes in antiquity, including dyeing textiles and as a traditional medicine. Today, Dragon Trees are mostly valued for the sheer grandeur they add to modern landscapes. Plants prefer well-draining soil and thrive in full sun to partial shade, being well-adapted to a Mediterranean climate and coastal conditions.
