Three-Leaf Chocolate Vine
Akebia trifoliata
The Three-Leaf Chocolate Vine is a deciduous, woody vine native to Eastern Asia, particularly China, Korea, and Japan, where it can be found in mountainous forests and mixed woodlands. A close relative to the Five-Leaf Chocolate Vine, Akebia quinata, the Three-Leaf Chocolate Vine is a smaller and less vigorous vine that has larger compound leaves with attractive serrated edges. Plants are twining and will eventually reach up to twenty feet long, but can easily be pruned back to a desired size.
Various parts of this plant have a history of traditional use in Chinese and Japanese herbal medicine including the leaves, stems, and fruits. Similar to other Akebia species, the Three-Leaf Chocolate Vine produces a unique lavender-colored, edible fruit that naturally opens down its length when ripens.
Plants are adaptable to a range of growing conditions and soil types. They prefer full to part sun and benefit from a shadier, sheltered location in hot summer climates. Three-Leaf Chocolate Vine is incredibly cold hardy and low-maintenance.
