Have you ever tried a fruit that tastes like ice cream? Well the Ice Cream Bean, Inga vera, really does taste like vanilla ice cream! Also known as Guaba in it’s native regions of Central and South America, the Ice Cream Bean is a tall tropical tree in the legume family. The fruit is a large, leathery pod that can be peeled open to reveal soft, fluffy, sweet fruit pulp around large soft seeds.

Similar to other members of the legume family, Ice Cream Bean trees harbors nitrogen fixing bacteria and so actually improves the soil it’s planted in. Growing Ice Cream Bean trees in the landscape can be tricky for folks who experience cold winters, although they have done well in much of the southern United States. Trees appreciate consistent moisture.

Cold hard to USDA zone 9b, or to 25 degrees Fahrenheit.
