Leather-leaf Fern
Polypodium scouleri
If you’re looking for a cool houseplant, try this one out! Leather-leaf Fern is an evergreen, sun tolerant, often epiphytic fern native to the Pacific coast of North America from British Columbia to Central California. Mature plants have large fronds, between one and two feet long, that stand above a thick, creeping rhizome, almost looking like a miniature Monstera. As the name suggests, Leather-leaf Fern’s leaves are thick and durable with a prominent midrib and other-worldly, circular, orange spore bodies (sori) that dot their undersides.
Plants are slow-growing, but will eventually form large colonies. Because of their epiphytic habit, Leather-leaf Fern is a great choice for stumperies (is that a word? stump garden?). These ferns prefer regular moisture and part-shade for best growth, but are rather adaptable.
Cold hardy to USDA zone 8a or to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.
