Cape Gooseberry

$3.00

Physalis peruviana

The Cape Gooseberry, sometimes also called Ground Cherry or Peruvian Golden Berry, is a delicious tomatillo relative that is starting to gain some popularity in specialty grocers, as well as in home gardens. Unlike tomatoes and other familiar savory solanums, Cape Gooseberry is a sweet, tart, and flavorful fruit that is excellent for fresh eating. With flavors akin to apricot and pineapple, these snackable fruit are well worth growing in the annual veggie garden.

Native to Western South America in Peru, Ecuador, and Columbia, Cape Gooseberry is a subtropical plant that appreciates warm weather and plenty of moisture. Plants grow upright, but can benefit from staking or caging to prevent tipping over, much like tomato plants. Cape Gooseberry plants grow up to 5 feet tall and once they begin flowering will continue to produce all season long.

Cold hardy to USDA zone 10a or to 30 degrees Fahrenheit.
