Society Garlic
Tulbaghia violacea
Tulbaghia violacea, commonly known as Society Garlic, is a perennial plant native to the grasslands of South Africa. While it is not related to true garlic (Allium sativum), the edible leaves of Society Garlic have a garlicy flavor and can be used as an herb much like garlic chives. The plant is actually part of the Amaryllis family and has small, showy flowers that range from lavender to white.
This clump-forming herbaceous plant has slender, succulent leaves and typically grows only one or two feet high and wide. Society Garlic prefers well-drained soil and full or part sun, but is otherwise adaptable. Plants are drought tolerant when established and may go dormant in climates that experience freezing temperatures during the winter.
Cold hardy to zone 7a and above, or to 0 degrees Fahrenheit.
